What to Pack for a Summer Safari

So you've booked a summer safari getaway. Now, the real planning starts: what to pack.

Reference three different people, and you will get four different answers. We are here to give you a one-stop list of what to pack when you visit Umkumbe Bush Lodge in the Greater Kruger.

Clothes for Safari

At Umkumbe Bush Lodge, we embrace barefoot luxury and would like you to feel comfortable. Here are a few practical pointers to help you dress for a laid-back adventure:

1. Breathable, natural fabrics: Linen and cotton clothes will keep you cool and stylish. Over layers, like a button-down long-sleeve shirt will protect you against the sun.

2. Muted, earthy colours: Unobtrusive hues such as beiges, khakis and browns will help you blend in with the surroundings. Bright colours and white are reflective and will make you visible to animals, potentially scaring them away. We would not recommend black clothes, for the sheer reason of the heat.

3. Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats: Remember our safari vehicles are open-roofed, so wearing sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun is obligatory. Our curios shop also sells safari hats if you don't have space in your suitcase.

4. Swimwear: Our infinity pool, which seamlessly integrates with the bush, is the perfect place to cool down between game drives, so remember to pack swimwear. No need for towels as we provide them.

5. Walking shoes: If you plan on participating in one of our walking safaris, we will require you to wear closed shoes to protect your feet.

6. Layers: Mornings and evenings on safari drives can be chilly, while midday temperatures in the summer can reach up to and over 40°C. So, layering is key. Pack a light jacket for the cooler evenings and a rain jacket for afternoon showers, or make use of the ponchos we provide for game drives.

7. A reusable, insulated water bottle: On safari, it is important to stay hydrated and what better way than with a reusable water bottle – bonus points if it matches your outfit. Forgot yours? Don’t sweat it; we sell stainless steel water bottles and have three water filling stations for your convenience. Enquire at the bar or the office.

Safari & Leisure Time Equipment

Make the most of your safari with gear to help you spot wildlife and capture them in your memories for years to come. Although optional, we would encourage you to pack the following:

1.  Binoculars: Whether you’re an avid birder or would just like to dabble in the hobby while you are on safari, binoculars will come in handy. We sell binocs at our curios shop, if you do not own a pair.

2. A camera, charger and extra memory cards: The best camera is the one you have at hand when action strikes, but even the latest smartphone likely won’t do the natural beauty of the bush any justice. If you would like to capture the essence of nature, we suggest researching the best cameras for wildlife photography. If you are on safari simply to savour nature and don’t care much about getting it on camera, that’s also fine with us.

3. A good book: With plenty of leisure time between game drives a good book can provide entertainment while you kick back and take a break from your phone. Our treehouse area is also stacked with books for your enjoyment.

Toiletries & Medication

When preparing for your safari adventure, it’s essential to pack the right toiletries and medications. While we stock a small selection of basic toiletries in our curio shop, it’s always a good idea to come prepared. Here are some extras to include in your luggage in addition to the usual:

1. Sunscreen: No one wants to look like they’ve had too much of the African sun after a safari. Make sure to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect you against sunburn or heat stroke.

2. Insect repellent: Although Umkumbe Bush Lodge isn’t in a high malaria area, the risk always exists. Pack and use insect repellent that contains DEET and consult your doctor before embarking on a safari. You can also purchase mosquito repellent at our curios shop.

3. Medications: If you take prescription medication, remember to pack enough for your trip. We also encourage you to pack a small medical kit with the basics.
