Elephant Birth at Umkumbe Bush Lodge Marks New Season

One fateful spring morning in October 2025, against the backdrop of sun-bleached African plains, the words “right place, right time”manifested. When returning and novice safari goers experienced this rare sighting simultaneously, we were reminded that nature moves at its own pace.

Geared to change direction at nature’s whim, we departed on our morning drive with one objective: to track down the best wildlife encounters the bush would allow. Little did we, as seasoned guides, know that we would also tick off a new sighting for the first time. Words and pictures can simply go so far to describe how this spectacular scene played out...

It Takes A Herd

Our engines were barely warm when, within metres of camp, we spotted a female elephant separated from her herd. Proceeding steadily and respectfully, as always, we inched closer towards the lone animal. As we approached, we noticed a wobbly calf finding its feet in her shadow. The cow must have given birth moments before we arrived.

Upon approaching the lone elephant cow, guides notice a newborn amidst the long grasses. Aware of the vultures, the mother covers herself with the after birth to mask their scent.

Elephants are known for burying, or even eating, their placenta after giving birth. Aware of the circling vultures, this mother displayed fascinating matriarchal instincts. Slathering the afterbirth over herself and the calf in an attempt to mask their scent. This likely assisted in throwing off the predators in that vulnerable moment. One cannot disregard the role of an older, concerned offspring who stood guard, gently warning us to keep our distance.

It was not long before the rest of the herd rushed over, welcoming their newest member in a protective huddle. After all, it takes a village (or a herd) to carry a newborn elephant past its early days. We were simply in the right place, at the right time – lucky enough to see the epitome of familial bonds play out right before our eyes.

What makes this even more special is that elephants do not have a defined “baby season”. However, newborn sightings are more plentiful during the spring months when the bush bursts back into life with abundant food and water resources.
