Synonymous with the African safari are the unmissable game drives. At Umkumbe Bush Lodge, game drives are conducted by a designated ranger and a tracker. The latter sits perched at the front of the safari vehicle, scoping for fresh tracks, while the former traverses the territory. Boasting immaculate skills, our rangers and trackers embark on a mission to encounter Africa's finest, the Big Five.

Being in the hands of nature means that every game drive will differ from the previous. Weather and seasons change, and animals do roam. So, our best advice is to have an open mind and embrace the circumstances that be – come rain or shine. From blankets for cold mornings to raincoats for sudden downpours, we make the necessary provisions for your comfort on every game drive. We also plan our seasonal itineraries to optimise viewing and comfort.

Six hours of game drives a day are split between mornings and late afternoons. Depending on the season, morning game drives depart at 5:30 or 6:00 and late afternoon drives at 16:00 or 16:30. During the morning game drive, we take a coffee break providing the perfect opportunity to meet your safari companions or to try authentic South African rusks – the trick is to dip them in the steaming beverage.

On the late afternoon game drive, you will stop for sundowners before darkness settles and the search for nocturnal species begins. With the help of the sharp-eyed tracker and their trusty spotlight, you can expect to encounter a range of elusive species, from leopards to chameleons and anything in between.

Drive times may change slightly at the discretion of the guide.
