Birdwatchers, pack your binoculars and open your eyes to the antics of our avifauna population. Playing home to more than 300 species of bird, birding at Umkumbe Bush Lodge can produce a wealth of sightings – from the Raptor kings of the African sky to the mascot of the savannah, the Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill.

As you make your way through the lodge, a chorus of Weavers welcome you from the canopy of trees. On safari drives, your guide will give you a panoramic view of the bush – focusing on big game but also giving the birdlife its time of day. Birds of prey are plentiful, and if you are lucky, you might spot a puffy-feathered Martial Eagle or Bateleur perched on a dead branch during your morning drive. Fish Eagles also make their appearance, ever so often.

Some other exciting birds you might encounter while birding at Umkumbe Bush Lodge include the Lilac Breasted Howler, which interestingly nests in termite mounds; the Purple-crested Turaco; Crimson-breasted Shrike; Violet Backed and Glossy Starlings and more. During evening safari drives you will cross paths with the nocturnal Fiery-necked Nightjar. Different owl species also grace Umkumbe Bush Lodge with their presence.

These are but a few bird species to be found at Umkumbe Bush Lodge. We hope your curiosity has been piqued and that we will see you, and your binoculars, soon!
